Daniel O'Reilly
Of Waltham, passed away peacefully, July 4, 2017 at the Pine Knoll Nursing Center in Lexington. He was 92.
Born in Everett to the late Alfred J. and Mary A. (McLauglin) O'Reilly, Daniel was orphaned at a young age and went to live at a home in Dorchester. At the age of 16 he moved to Waltham with relatives and instead of going to school he worked on a farm.
In 1941 Daniel joined the United States Coast Guard and served honorably as a Motor Machinists First Mate in World War II. During his service in the Coast Guard Daniel ship was called to assist in the aftermath of the Coconut Grove Fire. Daniel was truly patriotic and proud to have served his country and proud to be an American. This patriotism never waivered throughout his life. He joined many veteran's groups, specifically the American Legion post 156, and enjoyed taking part in events honoring our veterans.
Mr. O'Reilly worked for many years as an optical technician for Honeywell in Waltham.
Being a very active man, Daniel enjoyed playing golf and swimming, he also like to follow the local sports teams especially the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox.
He was the beloved Husband of 68 years to the late Isabelle (Hogan) O'Reilly, Devoted father of the late Daniel F.X. O'Reilly, and brother to the late Charles and Tommy O'Reilly, and Rita Reddington.
He is survived by his loving daughters Kathleen Rigby and her husband Don of West Virginia, Geri O'Neill and her husband Steve of Florida, and Eileen McCarthy and her husband James of Amherst, and his daughter-in-law Patricia (Spernow) O'Reilly of Harwich. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial Service in celebration of Daniel's life at the Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco & Sons, 773 Moody St., Waltham, Monday, July 10, 2017 at 7 p.m. Visiting hours will be held prior the service from 5- 7 p.m. Interment will be held privately at a later date. Parking attendants will be on duty.
