Obituary for Shuntian Zhang

Shuntian Zhang, of Newton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday February 28, 2023, in the comfort and care of her residence in Medway Country Manor Nursing and Rehab center at the age of 93.

Born on July 28, 1930, in Shanghai China, the first child of MIT graduate Huikang Zhang and Duke graduate Yungtiao Huang. She was raised in Shanghai and graduated from Sacred Heart High School for girls in 1949and attended St. John’s University (later it merged to Shanghai University of Finance and Economics). She graduated from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Accounting in 1953 and joined her father’s company, Ya Guang Manufacturing Co., Ltd as an accountant. She was persecuted during the Culture Revolution and retired in 1980. She married to a St. John’s alumni Xiangfu Zhu, a civil engineer in December 1960 and they had two daughters.

In 1999, she and her husband moved to the states to live with their elder daughter in Louisville Kentucky, where they took care of their grandson and watched him growing up. In 2010, she and her husband moved to Newton Massachusetts to live with her younger daughter and accompanied the growth of her two other grandchildren. Her life was filled with love and joy from her grandchildren. She was a strong woman. She never lost faith in life, though she suffered breast cancer in her late 70s and several fractures in her 80s. In November 2022, her health was deteriorating fast and she was admitted into the hospital, and later transferred to Medway Country Manor where she peacefully passed away.

Shuntian was an elegant lady, never shouting and arguing with anybody. She loved reading medicine books and practiced what she learned on herself. This may be one of the reasons that she had longevity despite the ups and downs in her health through her late life. One time she said that she should study in medicine instead of finance and economics. She also had a great sense of fashion from designing and making unique beautiful clothes for her two daughters back in China and making a recommendation of her daughter’s fashion until her late 80’s. She travelled around the world to enjoy different culture and beautiful landscape. She visited England, France, Holland, Denmark, Spain, and Germany in Europe; Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, Grand Canyon, most of the famous cities and national parks here in the states and left lots of pictures for our memories.

Shuntian is survived by her husband Xiangfu Zhu, her eldest daughter Jin and her husband Lingbo, her younger daughter Xueming and her husband Kecheng, grandchildren Allen, Vincent and Katelyn. In addition, she leaves many nieces and nephews that will all miss her dearly.

Private Funeral Services in Celebration of Shuntian's life will be held at The Brasco and Sons Memorial Chapels, located 773 Moody Street Waltham, MA. on March 7, 2023, at 2:30pm. Although services are private if you would like to sign the guestbook please do so, at www.BrascoFuneralhome.com.
