Obituary for Philip Lloyd "Phil" Burgess

Philip L. Burgess, a lifelong resident of Waltham, MA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln, MA at the age of 90.

Born in Waltham on Saturday, January 9, 1932, Phil grew up and lived on Hardy Pond. He was the beloved son of the late Garfield Burgess and Bessie Mae (Collins).

Phil was a graduate of the Waltham High School class of ‘49. After graduating from high school, he proudly and honorably served his country in the United States Air Force at Chanute AFB, IL during the Korean War. Upon his return, he worked with his brothers for his father’s construction company and helped build the Lakeview Congregational Church and many houses in the area including his own home for the last 61 years. Later he worked at Hilliard, Jarrell-Ash, Fisher-Scientific and Artisan Industries.

Phil was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Lexington enjoying both spiritual and social aspects of the fellowship. He was an avid Red Sox and Bruins fan. Building balsa wood model airplanes, attending local car races and skating on Hardy Pond were some of his favorite activities.

Phil mostly enjoyed spending time with his family. As a husband and father, he traveled to visit family in Maine and California, especially enjoying time at the Wiggin family farm with the cousins. He proudly supported and enjoyed attending the grandkids’ endeavors and accomplishments.

Phil is predeceased by his brothers, the late Gerald and Douglas Burgess of Waltham and is survived by his brother Robert Burgess of Gilbert, AZ.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Louise Burgess of Waltham, MA. In addition, he is survived by his son, Douglas Burgess and his wife Jenifer of Groton, Gail Burgess of Santa Maria, CA, and Lynne Long (Burgess) and her husband Andrew of Chelmsford. He was the proud grandfather of his seven grandchildren, Douglas Jr, Jamie, and Lisa Burgess, David and Daniel Evans, Justine and Megan Long.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Memorial Services in celebration of Phil’s life on Tuesday, January 10th at the First Baptist Church of Lexington, 1580 Massachusetts Ave., Lexington, MA. Calling hours will be held prior to the Service at 10:00 am – 10:45 am followed by the Memorial Service at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Care Dimensions Hospice House, 75 Sylvan St, Suite B-102, Danvers MA 01923.
