Obituary for (Ret.) Newton Firefighter John D. Nicolazzo

John D. Nicolazzo

Of Waltham, passed away peacefully on Tuesday October 11th, 2022 in the comfort of his new home in Sutton, MA, with his loving wife and partner of 58 years Margaret by his side after a long struggle with dementia. He was 79.

John was born on October 2, 1943 in the Brighton section of Boston before moving to Newton, where he would grow up and attend school.

He is the devoted son of the late Fillipo and Giovanna (Nicolazzo). As one of nine children he grew up surrounded with a lively and loving family and had many nieces and nephews.

John was appointed a Permanent Firefighter with the City of Newton Fire Department on October 10, 1971. Over his career he worked on Engine 7, Ladder 2, Ladder 3 and Ladder 1. He retired on January 2, 2004 after 33 years of faithfully and honorably serving the citizens of Newton. In his spare time John ran a successful landscaping business for many years.

John was a gifted athlete and excelled in many different activities including gymnastics, bocce, racquetball and especially golf. His prowess on the golf course won him dozens of trophies and accolades in the local newspapers. He had 8 certified holes in ones during his time on the golf course.

John was a loving and caring family man who worked unselfishly to provide a good living and a comfortable home for his wife and children.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years Margaret "Ginny" (Duffy) Nicolazzo; his devoted & loving sons John D. Nicolazzo Jr. and his wife Kristin of Grafton; James Nicolazzo of Sutton; and Joseph Nicolazzo of Sutton; his cherished grandchildren Olivia and Michael; and his dear siblings Frank Nicolazzo of Rochester, NY; Jerry Nicolazzo of Dedham; Connie Lane of Natick; and Jeanette D'Amato of Franklin, CT. In addition, he is survived by numerous nieces & nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and siblings Michael Nicolazzo, Bruno Nicolazzo Phillip Nicolazzo and Theresa Nicolazzo.

Those who wish to pay their respects to John and his family can do so at the Brasco & Sons Memorial Funeral Home, 773 Moody Street, Waltham prior to the Funeral Mass on Saturday, October 15th from 9:00 - 11:30 am. Family and friends are welcome to gather and celebrate John's life and remember the love and friendship he shared with others at a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday afternoon October 15th at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 573 Washington Street, NEWTON at 12:00 pm.
