Timothy M. "Smiley" McGovern
Of Saugus and Newton, passed away at Tufts Medical Center, Sunday, June 19th 2022 with his loving family by his side. He was 63 years old.
He was born on March 2, 1959 in Lynn, the son of Ann L. (Dineen) McGovern and the late Thomas J. McGovern. He was raised, educated and resided in Saugus, moving to Newton after his marriage.
A graduate of Saugus High School, Class of 1977; Tim worked at Comco in Saugus, and eventually made his career with New England Telephone Company and Verizon.
Tim had a quick Irish wit and loved to joke and banter with anyone who he felt comfortable with. He would make your feel at ease if you met him for the first time, with a one-liner or by discussing a topic of something that would interest you. He loved to read, listen to his classic vinyl collection and play keyboard and guitar. In the early 80's, he was a member of a local band "The Broken Idols". He adored his family and especially enjoyed his role as "Papa" to his grandchildren.
Tim is survived by his loving wife Rosemary (Castagnino) McGovern; his devoted daughter Mary McGovern Kurth and her husband Dana of Newton; his cherished grandchildren Tyler, Alec & Lillian; his beloved mother Ann (Dineen) McGovern; and his brothers Daniel McGovern and his wife Patricia of Saugus; Christopher McGovern and his spouse Timothy Corrinet of Worcester; and Matthew McGovern of Peabody. In addition he is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
Tim's family and friends will gather in a private "Celebration of Life" service in the immediate future.
