James E. "Jim" Regan
Of Waltham & Mashpee, passed away Wednesday evening March 24th, 2021 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis at the age of 82.
Born on July 21, 1938 in Waltham; son of the late James E. Regan and Helen (Toomey) Regan. Jim was a lifelong resident of Waltham and for the past 30 years spent time between his home in Waltham and in Mashpee.
A graduate of Weston High School; Jim from a young age started out as an entrepreneur, he began a career in insurance and real estate in 1956. Jim was a real estate agent, focused on property managment and auctioning properties.
In 1965, Jim converted the former Waltham Highlands Train Station at 100 Hammond Street into his Real Estate Insurance Office. After Jim purchased the abandoned depot he made extensive renovations in order to preserve the original structure of the building. The size of the building has tripled over the years, but you would not realize it by looking at it. Inside his office, clients and historians could enjoy a piece of Waltham's history through the display of a large mural of the depot and an exhibit of black and white photographs dating back to the 1800's. Today, the family business established by Jim remains on Hammond Street "Regan Real Estate, Insurance & Auctioneer".
Jim was elected to the Waltham City Council and served as Chairman of many different standing committees as well as President of the City Council over his 32 years of dedicated public service to the citizens of Waltham. He was one of the longest standing council members.
He was a philanthropist in many ways; donating his time, energy and financial resources to many local charitable and civic organizations. He was a longtime member and Past-President of the Waltham-Newton Jaycees and a Life-Member and Past-President of the Waltham Lions Club. Along with Jim's community involvement his passion for Waltham's history extended into his collection of Waltham postcards, which is the largest on record. Every June his office hosts an open house and invites the community to come and view the collection. Jim was also involved with Chief Earl Mills with Mashpee Wampanueg Tribe searching the internet, collecting memrobilia.
Jim had a love for skiing that he passed down to four generations of Regan's, and helped build the Prospect Hill Ski Lodge in Waltham. While skiing was a hobby, he also served as Ski Patrol. Jim could be seen driving his golf cart around John's Pond with his Yorkie "DJ" providing doggy biscuits treats for the neighbors canines.
He dedicated his life to his family and his work. His greatest enjoyment in life came from being surrounded by his family and his friends; he did extensive traveling with the people he loved on family vacations all over the world and in the United States including; California, Florida, Colorado, Michigan, Newfound Lake and Loon Mountain in Lincoln New Hampshire, Hawaii, Egypt, China, Russia, England, Switzerland, France, and Italy.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years Phyllis (Lopez) Regan; his devoted & loving children James E. “Jamie” Regan III of Mashpee, David Regan of Waltham, Kimberly Regan of Eldorado Springs, CO; and Timothy Regan and his wife Deborah of Bedord; his cherished grandchildren Katelynn, Sarah, Elizabeth and Timothy; his adoring great grandchildren Isabell and Madelynn. In addition he is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family who will miss him dearly.
He was predeceased by his cherished grandson James E. “Jake” “Moose” Regan IV and his dear father-in-law and mother-in-law Felix A. Lopez and Dorothy Lopez.

Following the guidelines of the Archdiocese of Boston, family and friends are welcome to gather and celebrate Jim's life and remember the love he shared with those he touched at a Funeral Mass in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 920 Trapelo Road, Waltham on Monday, March 29th at 12:00 pm. His burial will follow at Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham.
