Maria (Caruso) Nicolazzo

Of Auburndale, Newton, passed away on February 3, 2021. Beloved wife of 53 years to the late Bruno Nicolazzo. Loving mother of Pasqualina Nicolazzo-Salem and her husband, Hisham M. Salem of Newtonville and Rosina Nicolazzo and her husband, Jeffrey P. MacDonald of Newton. Devoted grandmother of Nader Alexander Salem and Jeffrey Bruno MacDonald.

Maria was born on November 8, 1935 in Sambiase, Santa Maria, Calabria, Italy. She grew up during World War II and the allied invasion. In 1963, she immigrated to the United States with Bruno and her two young children. She was happy to return to the land that her maternal great grandparents came to around 1900.

Maria enjoyed traveling, the arts and fashion all the while in the company of her family. She also enjoyed the beauty of nature and preferred it to being indoors, Insightful and intuitive while few things were beyond her imagination and creativity. She was an independent thinker and enjoyed her jobs outside the home but her family was always her priority.

Daughter of the late Nicola and Nicoletta Caruso. Dear sister of the late Teresa Mariangela Mirabelli and her late husband, Pasquale, the late Fiore Caruso and his wife, Beverly, Assunta Gallo and her husband, Vincenzo, Pasqualina Vaccaro and her husband, Vincenzo, all of Melbourne, Australia and Giovanni Caruso and his late wife, Gilda, of Auburndale. Dear sister in-law to the late Rosa Nicolazzo, the late Pasqualina Caruso and her late husband, Gabriel, Michelangelo Nicolazzo and his wife, Giovanna of West Newton, Gennaro Nicolazzo and his wife, Giuseppina of West Newton and Giovanni Nicolazzo and his wife, Anna of Auburndale. She is also survived by her many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins, and extended family, here and abroad.

Services will be private due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Entombment will follow at the Calvary Chapel Mausoleum in Waltham. Expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Research Institute, 450 Brookline Ave. Boston, MA 02215-5450, or Autism Speaks Inc.
