Obituary for Julia Bien-Aime
Julia Bien-Aime Jules was born on August 5, 1909 in Trou D’Enfer, Haiti, to Bernadin Bien-Aime and Previne St Hilaire. Julia was affectionately known by everyone as Gran-Nannan, a name given to her by her grandson Nesly.
As a young girl, Julia managed two businesses of her own: coffee and cacao farms. After she moved to the city of Zhyge, county of Borgne Haiti, she met her lifetime partner Orel Jules whom she married and had 13 children with. After they lost 8 of their children, they moved to a small town called Gros-Morne, county of Gonaives, where they lived with their 5 remaining children. As they continued to grow financially, they opened several stores that provided essential services to the community. They owned several of acres of land, cattle, and a few businesses that were very profitable.
In 1971, her beloved husband passed away due to illnesses. She was now a widow, but she was able to pull on her inner strength and manage her children’s education and helped them to grow in a Christian environment. Julia became a professional midwife and was assigned to the Alma-Mater Gros-Morne Hospital. She delivered babies for the entire town. She was also a well-known masseuse that helped woman during their pregnancy and the labor process with pain management. Oftentimes, there would be a knock on the door in the middle of the night for her to deliver babies, even during terrible weather conditions. She never said no, everyone, whether rich or poor, benefited from her care. She was known to have blessed hands that delivered healthy babies.
In 1995 Julia left Haiti and moved to New York to live with her son, the late Samuel Jules. Living in Brooklyn, NY was a new experience for Julia, there she enjoyed going out, learning about new cultures, and was loved by everyone. She quickly adapted to being in the United States and eventually became a US citizen.
Her faith continued to grow stronger as a member of Hebron French SDA Church, the Pastoral Staff and members there were always happy to see her and received her blessings as she prayed and laid hands on them. She lived for 23 years with her son Samuel and spent the last 2 years of her life in Massachusetts with her daughter Rosette.
With God as the priority in her life, Julia was consecrated as a Deaconess. Julia believed in returning her tithe, fond de deplacement (church investment fund), and offerings to the Lord. She was very generous and gave to the community and to the helpless. She always put the needs of others before her own. She taught her children to be respectful, united, humble and to let go of behavior that would keep them from inheriting the Kingdom of God. She was a great and true believer in Jesus Christ and never missed her Ecole du Sabbath, her “priere du matin” and her “veille a midi quand les brus de a terre” prayer sessions. As she got older, she
continued to be active in her community. She had the strength of a bull, and she continued to be mentally and physically fit and strong. She remembered everyone’s name, every verse in the Bible and every song in the hymnal until her last breath.
Julia passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 23rd in the afternoon surrounded by her family. Julia was a faithful woman of God and a powerful prayer warrior and we are confident that she will reign in Heaven with Jesus.
Julia, the matriarch and mother of all, is survived by her children: daughter Jeanette Alexis (Smith Alexis), daughter-in-law Rosemena Jules, daughter Sophonie Jules Aristil, son Jonas D. Jules (Lourdes J. Jules), daughter Rosette Julien (Josama Julien), and adopted son Joel Jules (Juvensky Jules); grandchildren, Goedlyne Jules-Warren, Frank Jules (Sally-Ann Jules), Rhoda Jules, Nelsen Jules, Jeffrey D. Jules, Lawrence M. Jules (Elizabeth Jules), Olguine Alexis, Junior Alexis, Odline Alexis, Nesly Jean, Jossia Miracle (David Miracle), Vernon Jules, Juliette Bastien (Delano Bastien), Chymide Julien, Michaelle Julien; great-grandchildren, Joviano-Kov Jules, Mitch-Tchelo Jules, Andrew Davis (Angie Campos-Davis), Stephanie Davis, Deja Davis, Laureen Julia Jean, Samantha Jean, Adam Amalou, Xaviera K. Bastien, Yelena B. Bastien, Aude N. Deglace, Autumn L. Jules, Amber E. Jules, and Avril E. Jules.
