Obituary

GAETANO THOMAS “TOMMY” MONTI,

Of Waltham, passed away Saturday, May 9, 2020 at the Care Dimensions Hospice Home after a long illness. He was 80.

Born in Lipari, Italy, the son of the late Mario and Caterina (Rando) Monti, Tommy moved to Lincoln, Massachusetts as a young man. Living in Lincoln for a short time he then moved to Waltham where he made his home and raised his family.

A well-respected tailor, Tommy owned and operated Vittorio’s Custom Tailoring in Waltham for many years. He was dedicated to his craft. A pattern designer he had worked in Boston for several years. He had taken many classes to hone his skills. He was also an accomplished musician and watchmaker. Tommy was determined to be the best he could be in all his endeavors.

Family was the most important thing to him and he was known for his sense of humor and his story telling ability. Tommy loved to care for his yard, keeping a well maintained house with his flowers in the front and his garden in the back. Tommy used the “Seventh Day” for his landscape upkeep.

Tommy just celebrated his 55th anniversary on May 2nd with his beloved wife, Anna “Doriana” (DiCarlo) Monti.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his loving children, Thomas M. Monti and his wife, Theresa of Waltham, Tammy D. Monti of Waltham, Mario Monti and his wife, Donna of Framingham, Anthony Monti of Waltham and Nadia Monti of Billerica, his cherished granddaughter Natalia Elizabeth, his dear sisters Bartolina Morvillo Formato, Maria Alagna and her husband, Salvatore and Angela Monti-LoNigro and her husband Anthony all of Waltham and his sister in law of Natalina Monte of Australia. He is also survived by his “Florida family” Barbara Collins her husband, Jim and children, Ace and Hannah.

He was predeceased by his brothers Pasqualino Monte, Phil Monti and infant Bartelo

For those we love and care about during this difficult time, Tommy’s family will gather privately in the Mary Catherine Chapel of the Brasco and Sons Memorial. Relatives, friends and those who had been touched by Tommy’s life are welcomed to attend graveside committal services at Mount Feake Cemetery, 203 Prospect Street, Waltham, Friday at 1pm.

Donations in his memory may be made to the America Heart Association at www.heart.org.

Our dad's final symphony. Written and given by my sister, Nadia.

Our Dad was born in Lipari, Italy on September 15, 1939. He was an accomplished musician in the old country, was a wonderful clarinet player, and the youngest student in the band. He learned his craft of tailoring there, where he made that his lifelong career. Dad came to America at 17 years old and lived in Lincoln with his Aunt, Uncle, and Cousins for several months until he moved to Waltham. He stole my mother’s heart a few years later when she came over to this country and as soon as she stepped off the plane. They were married on May 2nd, 1965. Mom and Dad just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this month.

Dad was first and foremost a family man and husband, but he worked endless hours to support us all while he and our mother raised 5 children. He was a man of many trades and honed his crafts meticulously.

My dad was :
A pattern designer
A watchmaker
A tailor
A gardener
A jeweler
A brother
A nephew
An uncle
A cousin
A loyal husband

And a strong-willed, stubborn Dad. He was ALWAYS RIGHT. He always said to me, “If you work hard in life you’ll have half your dreams, and believe me that’s a lot.” And that was true. He was so proud of his kids and his family loved us fiercely and was loved in return.

Dad was the hardest worker I have and will ever know. He was funny, brutally honest, and always well dressed. He loved cartoons, specifically Tom and Jerry, and his favorite movie was The Notebook. He also loved geography and history, pistachio ice cream, and his morning coffee with my mom - every single morning without fail. They took care of each other.

There is no greater honor for us to hold than to have taken care of Dad these past few months. We will miss you forever, Dad. Ti Voglio Tanto Bene, Il Mio Babbino Caro.
