Obituary for Richard Kenneth Shaughnessy

Richard “Dick” Kenneth Shaughnessy of Waltham, passed away peacefully with loving family by his side at the Veteran’s Memorial Hospital in Bedford at the age of 89.

Waltham’s own Dick Shaughnessy was the loving husband of Eleanor “Ellie” (Precopio) Shaughnessy and beloved and proud father of: Michael Shaughnessy and his wife Marie of Virginia Beach, VA; Tisha Shaughnessy Sullivan and her husband Gene of Medford, David Shaughnessy and his wife Elizabeth of Natick, and Brian Shaughnessy and his wife Victoria of Beverly. Proud grandfather of Jenni and Colleen Shaughnessy of Virginia Beach, VA., Scott and Lillie Sullivan of Medford, and Patrick, Daniel, and Ryan Shaughnessy of Natick. He was the dear brother of Joan and her husband Robert Cowie, Ann and her husband Guy Chicco; Maryellen and her husband Timothy Jasinski, the late Donald Shaughnessy and his wife Mary; Thomas Shaughnessy and his wife Joann; John Shaughnessy and his late wife Marie. He was also survived by many cousins, nieces and
nephews.

Dick attended Waltham schools and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served three combat tours during the Korean War from 1950-1953. His service took him to exotic locations such as Manila, Pearl Harbor and Siam. From 1959-1991 he served on the Waltham Fire Department as the tillerman on Ladder 2 at Moody Street Station. It delighted his children to see him sliding down the fire pole to greet them when they came to visit.

He also owned and operated Richard Shaughnessy Painting Co for over 40 years. But even in retirement, Dick painted for family members, friends, and neighbors; if you even mentioned painting a room, he would have his paint charts out and let you know what day he could start.

During his retirement, Dick enjoyed traveling with his wife Ellie, reading, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. They all loved seeing him come for visits carrying apple cider and donuts from the local farmstand and looked forward to the wonderful fishing trips he took them on to Hardy Pond, Concord River and the Charles River.

He enjoyed a glass of good bourbon while reading the latest choice of novels from his most recent trip to the library. He also enjoyed daily poker games with his friends at Arlington’s retired men’s club.

What Dick cherished most was spending time with his family. He loved the holiday gatherings, summer reunions at the Cove at Auburndale Park, vacations with his children and grandchildren and breakfast with his siblings.

Family and friends are welcome to gather and celebrate Richard's life and remember the love and friendship he shared with others at a Funeral Service in the Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco & Sons Memorial, 773 Moody Street, WALTHAM on Thursday afternoon March 16th at 12:00 pm. Services will conclude with United States Navy Military Honors and Waltham Fire Department Honors in recognition of Dick's faithful and honorable service to our Country and the City of Waltham.
