Obituary

(Ret.) Waltham Firefighter Thomas E. McGuire

Of Waltham, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday afternoon January 15th, 2020 at Newton - Wellesley Hospital at the age of 78.

Born on July 19, 1941 in Worcester; son of the late Edward McGuire and Florence (Thompson) McGuire, Tom was a lifelong resident for most of his life in Waltham.

Tom attended the Waltham Vocational High School; then served proudly with the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

He worked for several years at the Star Market in Sudbury before joining the Waltham Fire Department. Tom was appointed a Firefighter for the City of Waltham in July 1971. He was so proud to be a firefighter throughout his 30 year career. He retired from the Fire Department in February 2000. He had been employed in the Building and Grounds Department of the former Waltham Hospital for several years before working at the Our Lady's Academy School as a Custodian until his retirement in July 2011.

His family and his friends were the most important aspects of his life especially his brothers in fire service. He was a member of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts (PFFM), the International Association of Fire Fighters, the Sons of Italy Lodge Dante Alighieri Lodge #648 in Waltham, and the Waltham Lodge of Elks (B.P.O.E.) #953. He enjoyed the social clubs and several of the establishments on Main Street to have a Budweiser and scratch a few lottery tickets with friends. He also enjoyed fishing and playing in adult softball leagues. He was truly a great man who enjoyed life to the fullest and will be missed by those that knew and loved him.

He was predeceased by his loving son Brian E. McGuire.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife and devoted companion for 36 years Dorothy E. "Dottie" (Kaufman) McGuire; his loving daughter Waltham Police Officer Tracy Capello and her husband John of Waltham; his cherished grandson Joey Capello, who adored Tom and called him "Peaky". In addition he is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, close and dear friends in his brotherhood of firefighters.

He was predeceased by his dear siblings Sally McIntyre, Brian E. McGuire and several aunts and uncles.

Relatives & Friends are respectfully invited to attend Funeral Services in celebration of Tom’s Life from the Brasco & Sons Memorial Funeral Home, 773 Moody Street, WALTHAM, on Tuesday morning Jan. 21st at 9:00 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 920 Trapelo Road, Waltham at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow with United States Army & Waltham Fire Department Honors at Calvary Cemetery in Waltham. Visiting Hours will be held in the Brasco Funeral Home on Monday Jan. 20th from 3 - 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168

I went through school with Tommy. We were southsiders. My husband was a Waltham firefighter with Tommy. I worked at the Waltham Hospital with him. My sympathies go to his wife and family. He was a fun person. We shared a love of reading.
