Sylvio S. Deveau

Of Waltham, passed away peacefully in his home with his loving wife by his side, Tuesday, July 9, 2019. He was 79.

Born and raised in Acadieville, New Brunswick, Canada, to the late Martial and Anna Deveau, he came to Waltham over 60 years ago, where he has been a resident ever since.

Mr. Deveau worked for Senior Metal Bellows for 43 years. In his younger days he worked for the railroad in New Brunswick.

Sylvio was very proud of his Canadian heritage. He owned a second home on the waterfront in Pointe-Sapin, New Brunswick where he enjoyed his culture with family and friends. He will always be remembered for his contagious laugh, that seemed endless at times. Sylvio was a sweet and gentle man, who quietly went out of his way to help others in need whenever possible. Sylvio was also a Eucharistic minister at St. Mary's Church, where he was a long-time parish member.

In his spare time, Sylvio enjoyed splitting wood, gardening, keeping bees, and playing cards.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Gisele (Savoie) of Waltham, his sons Guy “Gervais” Deveau and his wife Virgina “Jinny” (Stauf) of Bellingham and Bill Deveau and his wife Alisa (Padavano) of Worcester, his son-in-law James Denson of Plainville, his brother Harvey Deveau and his wife Gene of Moncton, NB, and his sisters Agnes Caissie and her husband Gerard of Westborough, and Laurise Allain and her husband Aderice of Moncton, NB, and his sisters-in-laws Ida Deveau of Minto, NB and Jackie Savoie of Waltham. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Elizabeth Denson, Monica Denson, Jonathan Denson, Andrew Denson, Matthew Denson, Julian Denson and Sebastien Deveau.

He was the beloved father of the late Carolanne Denson, uncle of the late Sarah Savoie, and brother of the late Leo Deveau.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend funeral services from the Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco & Sons, Monday, July 15, 2019 at 9 am with a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Sylvio’s life at St. Mary’s Church, 145 School St., Waltham, at 10 am. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 2-6 pm. Parking attendants will be on duty.

Sylvio was one of the finest men I ever met and more like a second father to me than just a father-in-law. Hard working, honest, kind and very giving, he set the kind of example we all wanted to follow. Sylvio was a fun-loving guy with one heck of a sense of humor. He'd start laughing at something and you couldn't help but laugh with him. He was also very compassionate and empathetic. If someone was hurting, Sylvio was hurting for them. He was always interested and involved in everything the kids and grand-kids did. Always there when you needed him. I miss him terribly already, but look forward to meeting again some day in the next life. Love you Syl!

Sylvio will always hold a very special place in my heart. It is hard to put into words just how amazing this man was to so many or how much he meant to me personally. He and Giselle never hesitated when it came to helping anyone so it was no surprise that when my late best friend Sara needed them, they were there for her right away. It was also no surprise that they did the same for me. They didn't know that when they took Sara into their home well after their own children were grown, that they would be getting not one but two teenage girls (who gave them a run for their money!!)

From 11 years old, I spent almost every day at their home until well after graduating high school. At one point I just never left and started staying there for a while. There was no discussion about it, they just knew I needed them and they were there for me, no questions asked. They took me out wherever they went like I was their child, paying my way when we went out to eat, quietly slipping dollars into my hand for the church collection basket, going out for ice cream, movies and so much more. Sylvio would throw us around the pool even when we could tell he was busy and had stuff to do. If we needed help making a whirlpool in the pool, he dropped everything to help us out! I will never forget his amazing laugh either. He would slowly walk passed Sara's room making funny faces to make us laugh, often times cracking himself up even more than us!

I loved Sylvio like a father. He treated me just like his family, rewarding Sara and I when we did well and having long talks with us if he was dissapointed, sometimes shedding tears because he knew we could do better. No matter how upset he was though, every talk ended in a huge hug for both of us. Sylvio was one of the great ones. Compassionate, selfless, loving and kind. I know that I wouldn't be the person I am today without him. I truly listened to his words and took much of that into my adulthood. He helped me grow in my faith and as a person and I will be forever grateful to him for all of it. Rest peacefully Sylvio! Love you!!
