Of Newton, passed away peacefully Monday morning November 26th, 2018 at the Maristhill Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Waltham at the age of 83.

Born on May 19, 1935 in Medford; son of the late William Henry Garvin and Margaret (Golden) Garvin, Bill was raised in Medford and had lived in the Brighton section of Boston and Wellesley for many years before moving to Newton 29 years ago.

A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana Cum Laude; AB Degree, 1957, Bill furthered his education at Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts MD Degree, 1961. He received his Post Graduate Training Rotating Internship, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital of Boston, Brighton, Massachusetts, July 1, 1961 to June 30, 1962, Internal Medicine residency, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital of Boston, Brighton, Massachusetts, July 1, 1962 to June 30, 1964.

Bill received Board Certification Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine, 1968.

Dr. Garvin was recognized on numerous occasions for his commitment to his profession, receiving these Medical School Awards including; Recipient of the First Annual Mark Aisner Award for Excellence in Teaching Physical Diagnosis,Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts, 2000, Recognized by Tufts University School of Medicine, Third Year Medical Students, For Excellence in Teaching Medicine Clerkship – 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001,2002, Recipient of the Zucker Accomplishment Award – 2003 Tuft University School of Medicine.

In addition to his medical profession his civic involvement was endless as well including; Board of Directors, Youville Hospital, 1980-1990, Board of Trustees, SMHA, 1980-1984, Medical Director, Greenery Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center, 1974-2006, American Geriatrics Society, 1986 Member AHME, (Association for Hospital Medical Education) 2000 - present.

Bill had many hobbies and activities that he was passionate about, none more then playing golf. He was a member of the Wellesley Country Club for many years. Throughout his life he was a tremendous athlete; competing in several Triathlons. Bill enjoyed all types of music and had been a member of the Notre Dame Marching Band, but his favorite music was classical. He had a kinder and softer side that shined through with his love of animals especially his dog "Sprout". When he was a young boy he had a goat named "Daisy".

He is survived by his beloved wife of 23 years Ann B. (MacCormack) Garvin, devoted & loving children Ryan Garvin of Newton, Kelsey Garvin of Providence, RI, Lisa Mandozzi and her husband David of Ashland, Melissa McGrail and her husband Brian of Wakefield, Christopher Garvin and his wife Elise of Wellesley, and Allison Nelson of Framingham, his dear siblings Lawrence Garvin of Wakefield and Eunice Sullivan of Waltham. In addition he is survived by 9 cherished grandchildren, and many nieces & nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Funeral Service in celebration of William's Life in the Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco & Sons Memorial, 773 Moody Street, WALTHAM, on Friday morning Nov. 30th at 10:30 a.m. Visiting Hours will be held in the Brasco & Sons Memorial Funeral Home on Thursday Nov. 29th from 4 - 8 p.m.
