Obituary for Sr. Gloria Fournier Smsm

Of Waltham, entered eternal rest & peace in the loving arms of her God on Friday November 9th, 2018 at the Elizabeth Seton Residence in Wellesley at the age of 90.

Sister Gloria was born on Jan 25, 1928 in Portland, Maine; beloved daughter of the late Albert and Yvonne (Dehetre) Fournier. She was born into a family of four boys and four girls making a family of nine children.

Sr. Gloria entered the Marist Missionary Sisters on Feb.11, 1947. Sister took her first Vows on Aug. 15, 1949. She would later make her final Profession in Australia on Aug. 15, 1956.

After her first Profession in 1949, Sister worked in the circulation dept. in Framingham, MA, from 1949-1951.

She received her first mission assignment in 1951 to the South Solomon Islands, where she worked with the local Diocesan Sisters in Formation. In 1954, Sister Gloria needed medical attention and went to Sydney, Australia, where she stayed for a few years and did her Teacher Training and worked in the Province.

In 1963, Sister returned to the United States and was mission-ed to Jamaica and worked at Hansen Home for two years before returning to the United States for a Spiritual Renewal. From 1970-1971, Sister worked and received her LPN in Nursing at Y’ouville Hospital in Cambridge, MA. and her RN in 1974 from Mercy Hospital in Portland, ME. Sister used her nursing skills in Memphis, TN. from 1974 -1975 and then in 1976 left for Australia, to do her Midwifery Course before going onto Bougainville to work as a nurse. She worked there until 1983.

Sister returned to the USA in Oct. ’83 and became part of the North American Province once again in 1990. Sister Gloria was asked to work in the Archives dept. where she dedicated herself completely, despite her failing eyesight until 2005 when she moved to Marillac Assisted Living in Wellesley, MA. Sister had several falls over the years and moved to Elizabeth Seton Residence in 2015.

Sister Gloria leaves her dear siblings, Dolores of New Hampshire, Ronald of Florida and Andre of Maryland as well as nieces, many friends, and her devoted & loving community of Marist Missionary Sisters.

Relatives & Friends are respectfully invited to attend a Mass of the Resurrection in celebration of Sister Gloria's Life at the Marist Missionary Sisters Residence, 62 Newton St, Waltham on Wednesday morning Nov. 14th at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in the Marist Missionary Sisters Lot at Saint Patrick’s Cemetery in Watertown. Visiting Hours will be held prior to the Funeral Mass in The Marist Sisters Residence on Wednesday morning from 9:00 -10:30 am.
