Sr. Mary Immaculae Carroll SMSM (Marianne)

Sister was born on August 14, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA to Joseph Carroll, MD. (Philadelphia, PA Sept. 23, 1888 and Mary Sandman, (Philadelphia, PA Sept. 26, 1888). Sister was the only girl among five brothers (all deceased) Sister Mary Immaculae entered the Marist Missionary Sisters on Aug. 2, 1945 in Bedford, MA and made her first Profession of Vows on Feb. 2, 1948.

Sister received her mission assignment to Bougainville, PNG on Oct. 15, 1949. Sister began teaching school almost immediately and eventually went to Teacher training from 1958-1960. Sister came back to the States for her Home Visit in 1961 and returned to Bougainville to teach from 1961-1973 in various station schools and at various levels as well. Sister Mary Immaculae changed to Pastoral Ministry.

From 1977-1984. After surgery in Australia in 1985, Sister returned to Bougainville to work until all Mission personnel had to evacuate due to the political uprising in 1990. Sister returned to USA and in 1991 was missioned to Tampa, FL., in the Retirement Village of Rocky Creek where she lived and worked sharing her gifts of sewing and art until 2012. Sister then moved back to Waltham, MA to the “62” Community on Newton Street until she had a bad fall in 2014. Sister was missioned to Marillac Assisted Living facility in June of 2015. This past year, Sister’s health had failed rapidly and in June 2018 Sister needed more urgent care and had to move to Elizabeth Seton Residence in Wellesley, MA.

Sister Mary Immaculae died on Sept. 22, 2018. Sister leaves several close relatives, many friends with whom she worked with over the years of her missionary career as well as her Marist family.

Relatives & Friends are respectfully invited to attend a Mass of the Resurrection in celebration of Sister Mary Immaculae 's Life at the Marist Missionary Sisters Residence, 62 Newton St, Waltham on Thursday morning September, 27 at 10a.m. Interment will follow in the Marist Missionary Sisters Lot at Saint Patrick’s Cemetery in Watertown. Visiting Hours will be held prior to the Funeral Mass in The Marist Sisters Residence on Thursday morning from 8:30 -10 am.
