Richard Whelan

Of Arlington passed away Monday, July 31, 2018 at the Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. He was 78.

Born and raised in Somerville to the late Matthew and Catherine (Roach) Whelan, he also spent time in Medford before settling in Arlington over 40 years ago.

Mr. Whelan served his country honorably in the United States Air Force.

Richard worked as a custodian for the town of Arlington Public School Department and for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Housing Authority.

He was the father of the late Kenneth Whelan.

Richard is survived by his devoted longtime companion Barbara Marshall of Arlington, his children Richard Whelan of Medford, Maura Sullivan of Merrimack, NH, and Michael Whelan of Medford, and his grandson Brendan Sullivan. He is also survived by his extended family the McGahan's.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend funeral services from the Brasco & Sons Memorial, 325 Trapelo Rd., BELMONT, Tuesday at 9 am with a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Richard's life at St. Agnes Church, 51 Medford St., Arlington at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Arlington. Visiting hours will be held Monday from 4 - 8 p.m. Parking attendants will be on duty.
