Obituary for Joseph G. "Giuseppe" Caruso

Of Newton, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning April 25th, 2018 surrounded by his loving family at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston after a courageous battle with Leukemia at the age of 68.

Born on December 11, 1949 in Newton; beloved son of Giuseppe "Joe" Caruso and Concetta "Connie" (Nicolazzo) Caruso, Joe was a resident of Newton for most of his life. He spent many summers on Baxter Lake in Rochester, New Hampshire in a house he proudly built with his wife and friends.

A graduate of Waltham High School with the Class of 1967, Joe continued his education at Boston University for his undergraduate degree and completed his Masters at Boston College. During his time at Boston College he spent a summer abroad in Italy at the University of Foreigner's.

Joe began his teaching career at Watertown High School and went on to teach at Methuen High School for 20 plus years before working at both middle schools in Waltham. Throughout his career he taught Italian & Spanish.

Joe met his soulmate and the love of his life Marie while working at Methuen High School.

After retiring from teaching in 2006, Joe took over his father's business, "Joe Caruso Landscape Gardener." In most recent years Joe was an advocate and outspoken voice against the leaf blower ordinance established by the City of Newton. He worked tirelessly on behalf of the many landscapers who felt this ordinance would harm many local businesses.

Joe was a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association and MaFLA (Massachusetts Foreign Language Association). He was also a member of the Woburn Sportsmen's Association.

In his spare time Joe enjoyed boating, flying kites and was an avid television buff.

He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years Marie C. (Grillo) Caruso, his devoted children Jennifer-Ann G. Caruso of Newton, Joseph L. Caruso and his wife Shannon of Waltham, and Amanda M. Caruso and her husband Christopher Bryan of Newton, his cherished grandchildren Evangeline "Lena" Caruso-Bryan and Lorenzo G.C. Caruso-Bryan, his dear sister Dr. Joanne Caruso and her husband Antonio Sarandrea of West Newton, his adored nephews Tonino and Christian Sarandrea and his mother-in-law Carmela "Nellie" (DeLucia) Grillo of Methuen.
