Obituary for Sumner C. Hammond

Sumner C. Hammond of Kennebunk, Maine, formerly of Waltham, MA. passed away peacefully on September 19, 2022 at age 100.

A lifelong resident of Waltham and graduate of Waltham High School, Class of 1940. A member of The Greatest Generation, Sumner served in the Army Air Corps During WWII in The South Pacific. Following his service, he studied at Boston University and worked as a sales manager for several area manufacturers. After his retirement, he volunteered for eleven years at the Perkins Institute for the Blind in Watertown.

He was an avid golfer, tennis player and competitive sailor. Sumner enjoyed spending time in Maine especially the villages of the Kennebunks. He followed all the Boston sports teams along with college football. He loved listening to organ music and songs from the Big Band Era. Sumner was a faithful congregant at Weston Methodist Church where he served as head usher.

Devoted husband of the late Alice Hammond (Stone) with whom he shared seventy years of marriage. Predeceased by his infant grandson Douglas Edward Hammond and infant great-grandson Casey Hammond Webber.

Loving father of Judith Brown (Richard) of Hudson, MA., John (Elizabeth) of Kennebunk, ME., Russell (Janice) of Weston, MA., and Philip (Lynne) of Natick, MA. Also survived by seven grandchildren: Heather Lussier, Kristen Hawkins, Andrew Hammond, Abigail Walker, Molly Webber, Alex Hammond, and Christina Hammond. In addition, twelve great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Sumner was loved by those who knew him and his strength and kindness were an inspiration to all.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather and remember the love Sumner shared from 4 pm -6 pm on Friday, September 30th in the Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco and Sons Memorial Chapels located, 773 Moody Street WALTHAM, MA. A Celebration of Life Service will begin promptly at 5 pm. Parking Attendants will be on duty.
