Joseph A. Carney

Of Belmont, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2017 at the Meadow Green Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Waltham. He was 86.

Born and raised in Fort Lee, NJ to the late Joseph and Anna (Garry) Carney, Joseph (aka “Mike”) joined the Navy and served honorably. When his ship was in port for repair in Charlestown, Joseph and a shipmate decided to go roller skating. While at the rink, Joseph helped a young woman who had fallen. This woman later became Joseph’s wife, and the love of his life -- the late Natalie June (Gerace) Carney. Joseph and Natalie lived in Belmont, where they raised their four daughters.

In the early 1960’s, after working for the Raytheon Company, Joseph joined the Belmont Police department. In 1991, after 32 years of dedicated service, he retired from the department as a Lieutenant. Joseph remained active in his retirement and worked in security for the Harvard University Library system, and later drove a bus for the Belmont Council on Aging.

In his spare time Joseph was an avid biker, and in his younger days he enjoyed boxing. Joseph was instrumental in bringing the National Police Athletic League to Belmont; an organization dedicated to building relationships among kids, cops, and community.

Above all else, Joseph cherished his family. He is survived by his loving daughters Gloria Williams and her husband Mark of Lincoln; Frances Carney Drolette of Plymouth; Mary Ellen Carney of Waltham; Kathleen Joan Carney Uhl and her husband Charles of Louisville, KY; and, his precious grandchildren, Natalie Damaso and her husband Derek; Matthew Williams; Jacqueline Williams; Jenna June Drolette; Christopher Dacey and his husband Oscar; Erica Dacey; Joseph Dacey and his wife Lindsey; and Patrick Creane. He is also survived by his dear great-grandchildren, Lucas, Mia, Nolan and Hannah, and many loving and devoted nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend funeral services from the Brasco & Sons Memorial, 325 Trapelo Rd., Belmont, Saturday, December 16, at 9:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Joseph's life at St. Luke's Church, 132 Lexington St., Belmont, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be private. Visiting hours will be held Friday from 4-8 p.m. Parking attendants will be on duty.
