Obituary for Carolyn Jeffries Darling (Bayne)

Surrounded by the embrace of her loving family, Carolyn passed peacefully into her heavenly home at 88 years of age.

Carolyn was literally born at home in Washington DC to her parents James and Naomi (Walker) Bayne as the youngest of eight. She was only in elementary school when World War 2 started and all three of her brothers were serving. Carolyn helped at the home front by learning to knit squares to be sewn together to make blankets for the soldiers, rationing of food and supplies, and writing to her brothers overseas. She learned the importance of family, and found joy in the simple pleasures of life, and so at 15 years old was ready to embark on the destiny God had waiting for her.

After church services with her mother one day, Carolyn was greeted by the usher who asked her mother if he could walk them home. Yes, that was our dad, Donald, and they soon married when Carolyn was 17 years old, a senior in high school. With Donald in medical school they moved in with his parents and grandmother, and after her graduation she began working at the Interstate Commerce Commission. When Donald did his residency at Boston City Hospital, Carolyn pitched in to pay the bills by working at the Watertown Arsenal.

Carolyn's career with the government ended when they were expecting their first child. They had moved around in apartments until settling into their first and only home in Belmont in 1962 with their family and meager apartment furnishings. It did not make a difference for mom learned from an early age how to make little things important and matter. She did not need a college education for life had given her more wisdom and insight than a college degree could ever have given her. Puzzles and crayons, marbles, cards, and a ball could create many hours of fun and play. Mom’s quick wit and laughter and fun made it so much fun to be together as a family.

Donald and Carolyn were married for 63 years before Donald pre-deceased her. Carolyn lovingly leaves her children Mary, Cecilia, Michael, and Joseph and their spouses Jay, Bobby, Beth, and Barbara; her grandchildren Max, Naomi, Elizabeth, Aimee, Matthew, Nicki, Danny, James and Sarah; her great grandchildren Bella and Patience; and her brother Eddie and his wife Phyllis; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are all welcomed to celebrate Carolyn's life by gathering at Brasco and Son Memorial Chapel, 325 Trapelo Rd Belmont on Sunday, July 1 from 2PM to 6 PM, and at Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church 880 Trapelo Rd Waltham on Monday, July 2 at 11 AM. Interment at Newton Cemetery 791 Walnut St. Newton after Mass.
