Avery DeVell Mitchell, of Newton, passed away accidentally August 14, 2017 while visiting Cuba. He leaves a family and community in deep shock and sorrow. He was 28.
Born in Boston in December, 1988. He is the beloved son of Angela Philactos and DeVell LaTee Mitchell.
Throughout his life, Avery was a dedicated athlete. He excelled at soccer, football, and track. Avery attended Loyola University in New Orleans, LA, transferring to Tulane University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. He continued his work at Tulane as a Research Assistant from 2011-2012. He served as a Faculty Research Assistant at the University of Maryland, College Park for three years until moving home to Newton to help care for his father through his serious illness, resuming his work as a Research Assistant at Fenway Health Center in Boston. He was a second year graduate student in the Clinical Psychology program at UNC Chapel Hill
To family, friends, and colleagues, Avery was known as a kind, loving man who will be sorely missed.
Besides his mother he is survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Funeral Service in celebration of Avery's life at the Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco & Sons, 773 Moody St., WALTHAM, Thursday at 11 am. Interment will follow at Newton Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. Parking attendants will be on duty.
