Of Waltham, peacefully entered into eternal life with her loving family by her side early Wednesday morning June 1st, 2016 at Epoch of Weston Senior Healthcare at the age of 95.
Born on February 27, 1921 in the Brighton section of Boston; daughter of the late Peter and Catherine (Bresnahan) Flanagan, Irene was raised in Brighton and after her marriage moved to Medford for several years before moving to Waltham in 1952.
A graduate from Brighton High School with the Class of 1939, Irene began her work career with Chevrolet Motors where she met her future husband. Later in life while raising her children she became a Sales Associate at Grover Cronin’s Department Store in Waltham working her way to Administrative Assistance Secretary in the main office for over 20 years.
She was a devoted catholic and a longtime parishioner of Our Lady’s Parish Community in Waltham. She was a member of the Our Lady’s Sodality, the Alofa Malia Club of the Marist Missionary Sisters and President of the St. Mary’s Mothers Club.
Irene was the caretaker and provider throughout her life for many family members. Her world revolved around the love that she provided to her husband, children, grandchildren and extended family.
In her spare time Irene was an avid photographer, passionate Boston Red Sox Fan and loved flowers & gardening

Irene is survived by her loving & devoted children Kathryn E. Shepherd and her husband Henry of Orleans, Joseph A. King Jr. and his wife Susan of Wilton, CT, William Francis King and his wife Marilyn of Watertown and Maureen A. King of Waltham, her cherished grandchildren Melissa, Matthew, Emily, Alanna, Michael, David and Alecs, her adoring great grandchildren Nora and Scarlett, and her dear sister Elizabeth “Betty” Murphy of Somers, CT. In addition she is survived by many nieces & nephews.
Loving sister of the late Mary Grace Ryan, John “Jack”, William and Joseph Flanagan.
Relatives & Friends are respectfully invited to attend Funeral Services from the Mary Catherine Chapel of Brasco & Sons Memorial, 773 Moody Street, WALTHAM on Tuesday morning June 7th at 10:00 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Irene’s Life at Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 920 Trapelo Road, Waltham at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham. Visiting Hours will be held in the Mary Catherine Chapel on Monday from 3 – 7 p.m. Parking attendants will be on duty.
